Tom Duffield online talk

Last month, Tom Duffield conducted an online talk at the
university to discuss his practice and how it developed after university. Tom
discussed his personal practice as well as his experience with commissions and
how he continues to develop his practice now.

Tom’s discussing his practice engaged me due to how personal
his project was. The emotions and experiences Tom had whilst photographing the
whole house shaking resonates with my own current personal project. Toms’
technique of photographing his Father indirectly was similar to how I attempted
to photograph my families belongings rather than photographing them directly
and the nerves Tom experienced when taking self-portraits with his Father
reminded me of my nerves when interviewing my Family members for the first
time.

Tom also discussed his work being featured in The Financial
Times online and how this led to commissions for The Financial Times and the
Telegraph Magazine and how he tells narratives visually through photography.
Concentrating on the angle and height of the camera as well as the location
allows him to visually create narratives as well as convey concepts such as
power.

Overall, I felt an understanding of the emotions that Tom
discussed in him talk and resonated with his personal practice. This motivated
me to continue thinking about the ways in which I can visually create narrative
and emotion within my photographs.
