Max Ferguson lecture

Last week, Max Ferguson attended the university to discuss
his personal practice, the formation of Splash and grab magazine and his work
with publications such as Port magazine. I also attended a feedback session
with Max to hear his thoughts on my ‘Seeking out Euphoria’ project.

One of the most significant things that appealed to me
during Max’s talk was his discussion around graduating from university and
working in retail whilst also trying to develop his practice. Max told us of
his experience working in a bike shop whilst attempting to create his
publication Splash and Grab. The concept of balancing a job that provides
income after graduating and attempting to continue developing my practice at
the same time is something that I have had experience doing before attending university
and something that I will be repeating next year after graduating. Hearing Max
discuss his difficulties balancing the two but overcoming them through
determination made me think more positively around how I will continue to
develop my practice after graduation as I work full time.

Max also provided me with useful feedback for my ‘Seeking
out Euphoria’ project. Max has experience collaborating with photographers and
their personal projects for splash and grab. Max admired my bravery through my
photographs but also recommended that I begin to look at more positive and
happier moments as my transition progresses.

Overall, I found Max’s talk engaging and his discussions around
his experience as a graduate and creating work alongside working a full time
job made me think more positively about how I will continue developing my practice
as  a graduate.
